Food has this strange way of making people happy. Whether that be buying your mum a box of chocolates for her birthday, making dinner for your partner or simply grabbing a burger from McDonalds, it always seems to bring on a smile.
At Easter I was inundated with orders for my delicious brownie-filled eggs - which I must admit brought a smile to my face. In February I was making batches of brownie, but instead of cutting it into nice neat pieces as usual, I crumbled it in my hands, mixed it with lashings of my chocolate buttercream and then squished it between my fingers to turn it into a scrumptious, stuffable and moist ingredient to put inside Easter eggs.
I drizzled melted chocolate over these bad boys and added toppings that I thought everyone would love - Creme Eggs, Mini Eggs, Malteser Bunnies, Rolos, Peppermint Aeros... the list goes on! I took pictures of them and then asked my teenage daughter Amber to taste test them for me - I get the impression she loves being my chief taster! She takes great pride in giving me constructive criticism.
From the moment I put these fantastic brownie-filled beauties online, the orders started pouring in. As my customers told me their loved one’s favourite chocolate for the choice of topping, I could feel the excitement through their messages.
With Easter weekend fast approaching, I anticipated that there could be some last-minute orders as there had been with Mother’s Day - so I bought extra eggs and made more brownie just in case. Thank goodness I did because I had more very excited people still wanting my yummy eggs the day before Easter Sunday.
Being a small business I always look at ways of bringing my make and bakes to more local people. So, casting an eye over the ‘Nextdoor’ app while sitting on the sofa watching TV on the Saturday night, after making more than 30 of my special eggs, I came across a message from a lady called Ayse who was struggling to find any Easter eggs - shop shelves were empty. So I commented on the post mentioning my eggs, on the off chance that there may be some interest as a few other people were having the same issue as Ayse.
There were plenty of responses to my post that night, but no further orders - so I put the KitchenAid mixer away. Waking early on Easter Sunday morning, I checked that Nextdoor post just in case - to my surprise there were two more orders! So at 8am I was making yet more brownie, hoping that I could rapidly cool it down to make more of my oh-so-popular chocolate wonders!
This is when I noticed a post from Richard. He said that he would love an egg but understood that as Easter Sunday would be a busy day for me he would happily wait a day or two. I don’t like to let anyone down though, so sent Richard a message to let him know that I was already making two more eggs and that squeezing in another wouldn’t be a problem.
He was overjoyed and asked if I could make two - one for himself and the other for Ayse who had posted the original appeal. Richard said he would like to pay for and deliver the egg himself. I discovered that Ayse needed the egg for her nephews, so Richard was about to make her a very happy lady.
“Karma is good and I believe by doing good, maybe that will result in someone else being good to another [person],” said Richard.
Ayse was overjoyed that someone would be so kind and do such a wonderful thing. I received a lovely message from her: “This really has touched me - what lovely people there are. Wow, honestly I’m really touched. Have a lovely Easter.”
Luckily my eggs were enjoyed by all who received them. Ayse sent me a further message: “Cheryl, just wanted to say my sister and nephews absolutely loved your egg. We will definitely be getting from you in the future.”
I would like to say a special thanks to Richard who not only brought a big smile to Ayse’s face, he made her nephews very happy and helped a small business like mine. I am so truly touched by this pure act of kindness, I just had to write about it. Good deeds certainly do go a long way.
