Thinking of ideas for Father’s Day is a bit of a nightmare for me. I’m so used to all things girly as I have a 14-year-old daughter, who you’ve probably read about in some of my previous blogs.
After a bit of head scratching I settled on the colour blue, drink, golf, shirts and ties and, the big one, football! But how an earth do I make a football to go on the top of cupcakes? I don’t want to be sitting down with a knife carefully cutting and crafting the hexagonal patterns of a football when I could potentially have a large number of orders. Even if I started now I don’t think I’d have them all done in time for Father’s Day in June! So I searched the internet for some football cupcake topper tips and the following is an idea that worked rather well for me.
1. Roll 6 small balls of black icing
2. Roll 10 small balls of white icing
3. Dust the surface with corn flour to prevent the icing balls from sticking
4. Place the first black ball on the surface
5. Take 5 white icing balls, brush with water and stick them around the outside of the black ball so it looks like a flower
6. Take 5 more white balls, brush with water and continue to stick your balls round the outside on top of the previous white balls
7. Take the remaining 5 black balls, brush with water and stick between each white ball on the outer edge
8. Make sure all balls are firmly stuck together by pressing gently
9. Use a rolling pin to roll evenly in all directions to flatten the balls
10. You should now start to see a football forming
11. Use a round cookie cutter to complete your football cupcake topper
I put my football toppers on 3 cupcakes in a box and I topped the other 3 with Happy Father’s Day personal messages made from icing the colours of football strips. All cupcakes are available to purchase on this website.
