Cutting a tall cake

I often get asked how to cut a tall cake, admittedly they can be rather daunting.

Everyone immediately thinks you cut it almost like you would a pizza, but unfortunately if you did that you would have huge pieces and very few of them.

How you ask do you get so many pieces out of a 5 inch wide cake?

You need your cake to go as far as possible and the way to do so is explained in the pictures below.

The cake in the above picture is a 5 inch wide cake and it’s approx 8 inches tall, the cake was sliced from the top into 4 slabs and laid flat

I took one of the middle slabs and cut lengthways into 3 pieces

Then cut twice widthways to create nine pieces of cake

Now cut the other middle piece in the same way, but the end pieces cut in half lengthways, then cut twice widthways in order to create six pieces of cake, in total you should now have 30 good sized pieces of cake, you could cut the pieces in half again to make the cake stretch a little further
