Baking for Pride month

Having lived in the very diverse and colourful Brighton for approximately 9 years, I could see just how huge Pride was there, each year the parade seemed to get bigger and bigger.

It's quite amazing that Pride actually started back in 1973. It was a rather small affair back then, organised by the Sussex Gay Liberation Front, it was a brave thing to do at the time. Only 7 years before that, if you were found to be gay, it would have ended in a prison sentence.

It wasn't until 1991 that Pride came back to Brighton, it was born out of a political objection to the government passing laws to ban the 'promotion' of homosexuality. Pride in 1991 was very different to what you see now, with many homemade costumes and ending with a Pink Picnic in Preston Park.

It took some time but organisers slowly managed to convince local businesses and performers, that it was a good thing to be associated with and slowly Pride began to grow and change.

Pride hasn't always been in Preston Park, and changed to being in other places such as Queen's Park, but from 1996 it returned to be at Preston Park, where we all know and love.

The Parade has seen it's fair share of haters, which is beyond me, it is such a wonderful event to see and be part of, that celebrates something truly special, that we should all be free to be ourselves. Luckily a lot of these obstacles have been overcome and Pride has become the huge success that we see today, attracting some huge stars such as Lisa Stansfield, Barbara Windsor, Fat Boy Slim and Britney.

I wanted to celebrate Pride through my baking and spread the colourful love. So I created some yummy rainbow sugar cookies/biscuits, they are great for taking to Pride and eating with your friends, handing out at a picnic or party. Or do you know someone who has a birthday during pride month? My rainbow squares of tasty loveliness can be popped in the post and arrive on your loved ones doormat in no time at all. They can be personalised with name, age, occasion, message of your choice and you can personalised as many of the biscuits as you need. You may want to put the name of each person at your party on them, or how about 'Happy Pride' if you are having a little party? The possibilities are endless!
